Re:Nylon

Prada has always used nylon as a main material. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone nylon in its bag and accessory line earned the world's attention, and Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). Now the powerhouse Milan-based house has reimagined its iconic nylon bags by turning them into sustainable re:Nylon fabric. The new collection comes with six classic designs that include bags for belts, shoulder bag, tote bag duffle bag, and two backpacks -- in repurposed ECONYL fabric that's created from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber waste that is sourced worldwide.

The repurposed fabric is the result of a partnership with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer which produces Econyl fabric out of recycled nylon waste, which can be reused over and over again without losing its quality. It's part of a wider initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. In addition to the six Re:Nylon bags, the range also includes a pair shoes and boots made of repurposed ECONYL and various apparel items made of the same material.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", an online series that focuses on the innovative process used to create the Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling facility in Arizona which transforms old nylon into recycled ECONYL.

With the shift to re:Nylon, Prada is achieving its most significant reduction in virgin nylon use yet, resulting in the saving of 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. This move will also lower the carbon emissions of the company by around 57,000 tons. This is the latest sustainability initiative by the label, which just went fur-free in its clothing and accessories, which was which was lauded by environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.

Recycled Nylon

While it is more beneficial for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon has its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and will sit for decades in landfills or the oceans until it is broken down into smaller particles which can endanger wildlife. It is also not breathable and can shed microplastics when washed. However, it uses 50 percent less energy to make compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag fabrics like cotton or wool.

The fabric is made of the petroleum and waste plastic, which is produced by burning fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources and the carbon emissions from the production of virgin nylon. It is also easier to handle than other bag fabrics since it doesn't require to be dyed or woven. This makes it an excellent choice for bags that are used often, such as yoga or gym equipment.

In addition to its environmental benefits recycled nylon is a more durable and more flexible fabric than conventional cotton or polyester. It is also able to withstand a great deal of abuse, which makes it a great choice for backpacks and outdoor gear. The material is lightweight and easily shaped and stitched into the desired shape of backpacks. Nylon is a great option for outdoor gear since it is water-resistant, and it doesn't absorb mildew or odors as readily as other fabrics.

When selecting bags that are sustainable, be sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification is a test for chemical residues, as well as environmental and social responsibility. This certification is a good indicator of brands that are honest and responsible.

Patagonia provides, for instance backpacks in a variety and yoga equipment made of recycled nylon, referred to as Econyl. The nylon is created in a closed loop system that uses 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. In addition, the brand is a partner with organizations working to protect the environment.
